Documentary about people living in caves: No place on earth

I just watched the german american documentary “No place on earth” which they did show on german TV. It is an interesting documentary about Jews during WWI hiding in a cave under the earth for more than 500 days! 500 days without any daylight, for most of them, well some men had to go up and find food, but the women never got out or the children! And I was imagining how that is, not seeing the green of the plants or the sunlight the colors and how amazing it must be then after this time to be back out there in this brightness and wonder! I think you would get a feeling of wonder and would appreciate everything very much, the food as well, which was very short then.

I did like the film. Some of the survivors are being interviewed in the documentary and visit one more time the caves together with some of their grandchildren. Amazing to see.

Here is a trailer followed by an interview with Janet Tobias the director of the documentary and Judy Gelman Myers on Shalom TV where they speak about making the film:

Talkshow about women that have “male” features

I had been invited to give an interview in a talkshow in the Ukraine. It was great visiting Kiev a wonderful city, that has a special atmosphere for me, somehow felt like coming back to an old ancient mother, a very deep feeling. Later I read, that Kiev was called “Mother Russia”.

I asked my family if there had been any connections with Kiev in the family. My aunt told me, that some of our ancestors once had a stagecoach going between Kiev and some place in todays Poland! Amazing! So many things that I did not know about the ancestors. I believe we feel this connection with a place and the family, when we visit places where some of our ancestors had been living or visiting and that had been important to them somehow.

At this moment people in Kiev are having lots of political fights in the street and I feel sorry, hoping for them to find a peaceful and good solution.

Here is the video of the show, it is in russian,  you can still hear my answers in english,….the show was interesting as there had been invited very different women, some that had trained their muscles, were lesbians, or had a deep voice, or me having a beard. I could follow the talkshow, as I had a little thing in my ear and a translater, who was really doing so well to translate the whole show for me simultaniously! Thanks to him I say here, as I did not have the chance to tell him personally after the show.

One thing really astonished me, that many in the audience had a difficulty to accept that women train their muscles. They said women should be women and men should be men and that a man is strong and a woman is the one that needs the strong man. Well this is one model, that might have been valid for some centuries. On the other hand, there had always been strong women, that were for example living a farmlife and really doing things like they would say are for men. I hope it will be possible to open up the minds of people in order to understand, that there is a great variety of humans in this world and that we do not have to make us fit into a model that the fearful mind of humans created in order to have a system that might take away fears.

Thank you to everyone who made it possible for me to come to Kiev and participate in the talkshow!

Video Bearded woman

Another young woman that decided to let her beard grow!

Beautiful woman with a beard

Passport Control

Some weeks ago, I came back to Germany from having been abroad. The woman at the airport, wanted to see my ID Card in which is a photo of me without a beard. She looked at it and said:

“Well I think you are in a transition and this name tells me that you are female, but as you are having a beard which is a male feature, you need to change the picture in your passport.” I told her, that men do not have to change a picture in a passport if they are wearing a beard. She did not want to accept. And insisted that I soon need to change my passport.

I was tired and not in the mood of discussing, and I must admit I was scarred that if I did say anything wrong it could end in a difficult situation.

I passed the control and felt disappointed. A woman had told me this. And I had expected her to be supporting. I have traveled many countries in the last years, but never anyone dared to say something about my photo in the passport and my beard. They did look confused, or did ask, but never  told me to change the picture!

I got angry, and thought typical for the Germans! Some time ago they told the Jews to wear a star on their clothes so they could recognize them, and now they tell me to have the bearded picture in my passport so that things are more clear and sorted. I think people need to be informed in order to understand that there are not only two genders. To understand that between the two genders there are so many variations possible and that some people do not fit in any of the boxes. And that this is ok. No fear. Just a variation. To be curious instead to be scared. Well a lot to learn a way to go……

Bearded women – accepted?

I don´t know how many women in Germany are wearing a beard. How many are there on our planet?

I have met four women with a beard living in Germany. All of them are accepting the fact that they have a beard and they let it grow. Perhaps there are more. And there are more for sure in America, and other countries. Some women in the UK are participating in Movember to raise money for a good cause by letting grow their facial hair.

Some years ago, it was impossible for a french actor who had a show about a bearded woman to find real bearded women, someone told me. Well something seems to have changed since then! I feel there is a gate open now to be more yourself and more and more women are having the courage to just be the one they are, and in this sense to say well there is facial hair and I am not going to laser or tweeze it.

Perhaps in some years it will be possible and quite normal and accpted that some women are wearing a beard. And it will be not a problem to find a job, bearded women won´t be bullied anymore. People will be used to a womens face with a beard. Conciousness will have changed and poeple are living their individuality. They will see that it makes everyone richer, if people are living their potential and if people are accepting who they are and what they look like. The trend that had been “normal” in the past: to look like a model in a fashion magazine, will be over.

The fashion, if you want to call it so, will be to look like yourself!
